Desperate Appeals: Green Card Holder Paramjit Singh’s Family Fights for Freedom as Brain Tumor Surgery is Delayed in ICE Custody

Paramjit Singh remains in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with his case drawing attention for its troubling developments. The 48-year-old was detained at Chicago O’Hare International Airport while returning from India, and his planned second brain tumor surgery has been postponed due to his continued detention.

His case is set for a hearing on October 14, but the situation has escalated as his family revealed to the BBC that ICE is now citing a dubious offense from 2008 that, according to them, does not actually exist. “Paramjit Singh is not receiving the medical care he urgently needs; he’s being given only basic check-ups,” remarked his attorney, Louis Angeles.

Initially, upon his arrest, authorities referred to a minor incident from 1999 in which Singh reportedly used a public pay phone without paying and was sentenced to just ten days in prison, having already paid a fine of $4,137.50. Although ICE claimed Singh faced an additional one-and-a-half-year sentence, he effectively served only the short prison time for that case.

Adding to the confusion, Singh’s niece, Kiran Virk, stated that ICE has now alleged a forgery conviction in Illinois from 2008. However, after hiring a private investigator, Virk learned there’s no record of such a case against her uncle, suggesting that he may have been mistaken for someone else. “We are also taking legal steps to prevent his deportation from the U.S.,” Angeles added.

Singh has lived in the United States for three decades, holding a green card and managing a business in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He travels back to India multiple times a year. His family is increasingly distressed about his health, as he battles a brain tumor and has a heart condition. Concerns heightened after he required emergency medical attention while in detention.

Earlier reports indicated that Singh had been granted a bond, but his family accused ICE of employing “court tactics” to prolong his detention. The situation raises broader questions about immigration enforcement practices and the treatment of individuals requiring medical care while facing deportation.

As Singh’s family continues to fight for his release and adequate medical attention, their plight exemplifies the complexities and challenges faced by many undocumented immigrants in the U.S. seeking justice and humane treatment in the face of legal hurdles. The community is watching closely, with hopes of a fair resolution in the upcoming hearing.
