Smriti Mandhana Shatters Records as Youngest to Reach 5,000 ODI Runs!
Indian opener Smriti Mandhana made cricketing history on Sunday by becoming the youngest and fastest woman to reach 5,000 runs in One-Day Internationals (ODIs). This remarkable achievement took place during India’s Women’s World Cup match against Australia at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.
The 29-year-old achieved this milestone in her 112th ODI, hitting a powerful six off Australian pacer Kim Garth in the 21st over. She surpassed West Indies star Stafanie Taylor, who accomplished the feat in 129 matches. According to ESPNCricinfo, Mandhana now leads the list of the fastest players to reach 5,000 ODI runs, followed closely by Taylor (129 matches), Suzie Bates (136), Mithali Raj (144), and Charlotte Edwards (156).
Mandhana was dismissed for 80 runs off 66 balls, caught at deep midwicket by Sophie Molineux. Her innings included nine boundaries and three sixes, showcasing a steady start before ramping up the pace after securing her half-century off just 46 balls.
This season, Mandhana has been in exceptional form, now standing as the highest run-scorer of the calendar year with 974 runs. Her score on Sunday marked her first fifty of the 2025 Women’s World Cup, a significant return to form after scoring only 54 runs in the first three matches.
Her performance against Australia was anticipated; earlier, Mandhana had scored two centuries and amassed 300 runs during a three-match ODI series against the same team leading up to the World Cup. With this groundbreaking achievement, Smriti Mandhana continues to solidify her reputation as one of the most dynamic and consistent batters in women’s cricket.
