The Assam government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma have consistently tried to maintain distance from Shyamkanu Mohanta, the main accused in the tragic death of Zubin Garg. Despite this, Mohanta, known for his charismatic influence, continues to hold significant positions in government colleges and universities, leading to a situation that remains unclear and widely discussed.
Official records indicate that Mohanta was appointed to the Board of Governors of the Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology (JIST) for a three-year term starting in September 2018. The notification issued by the Assam Higher Education (Technical) Department highlights his placement alongside prominent figures such as Dr. Ranjan Tamuli from IIT Guwahati and former director Dhirendra Nath Buragohain, emphasizing the board’s prestige.
In addition to his role at JIST, Mohanta is also part of the governing body of Arya Vidyapeeth College, with no formal measures taken for his removal up to this point. Reports suggest that in 2021, he served as a Professor of Practice at Nagaon University and was also a member of the governing body of Kaziranga University before being removed recently.
