Cabinet Unveils Exciting Welfare Measures for Students and Teachers
Guwahati, Oct 6: In a significant move for educational reform, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Cabinet approved a series of measures on Monday aimed at benefiting students and teachers across Assam. Key decisions include reducing training fees, providing free bicycles for students, and easing transfer norms for female educators.
To better support female teachers in South Salmara and Dhubri districts, the government has now permitted transfers to their home districts or nearby locations, regardless of available posts. “Teachers who have completed five years of service away from home in these two districts can now apply for transfers irrespective of post availability,” Chief Minister Sarma announced following the Cabinet meeting at Lok Sewa Bhawan.
Addressing a long-standing demand, the government has also cut the mandatory service period under the Education for All campaign from five years to three, enabling teachers to qualify more quickly for government school appointments and special recruitment processes.
In addition, the Cabinet approved a reduction in annual fees for Industry 4.0 trade training provided by Tata Technologies, decreasing the cost from Rs 14,000 to Rs 11,000. “This will provide much-needed financial relief to thousands of students and their families,” Sarma stated. Annually, around 2,000 students engage in advanced technical training at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics throughout Assam, backed by a Rs 3,000-crore investment partnership.
“We want to ensure that financial constraints never obstruct skill development and the future employability of our youth,” Sarma emphasized. To further assist students, the government allocated Rs 126 crore to reimburse admission fees for 175,817 students recently enrolled in undergraduate courses under the free admission initiative.
Additionally, the Cabinet approved the distribution of free bicycles for 311,614 Class IX students in government schools, with Rs 130 crore set aside for this project. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to enhancing educational access and reducing financial barriers for students across the state.
