Tragedy Strikes Mirik: Landslides Claim 11 Lives, Dudhey Bridge Collapses
Residents of Mirik, West Bengal, are facing the aftermath of devastating landslides that have claimed at least 11 lives in the subdivision alone, echoing the tragic memories of a similar disaster that struck the region in 2003. The latest calamity occurred on Saturday night due to heavy rainfall that triggered the deadly slides. In total, 22 fatalities have been reported across the Darjeeling District, primarily affecting local communities in and around Mirik, including Sorasaley, Toklang, and Mechi Dhara Gaon.
Among the significant infrastructural losses, the Dudhey Bridge-an essential connection between Mirik and Siliguri-collapsed around 4 a.m. on Sunday, shortly after a vehicle had crossed it. Local residents were stunned as the bridge, originally built as a temporary structure, had been scheduled for replacement with a new concrete version, but construction had been postponed due to the persistent rains.
Most of the casualties occurred while residents were asleep, resulting in them being trapped under debris in villages such as Toklang and Sorasaley. Parween Prakash, the Superintendent of Police for Darjeeling, has been providing regular updates on road conditions and vehicle movement throughout the district, emphasizing safety amid the chaos.
In response to the dangers posed by the ongoing situation, district authorities evacuated homes near the Balason River adjacent to the collapsed bridge and relocated residents to a community hall for their safety. Just after the bridge’s fall, three nearby houses also collapsed, exacerbating the destruction.
Local leaders, including Siliguri Mayor Gautam Deb and Darjeeling MP Raju Bista, have visited the most affected areas to assess the situation and engage with residents, demonstrating solidarity in this time of crisis. The community is rallying together as they navigate the challenges brought by nature’s fury and seek support for recovery.
