Ajit Agarkar Questions Rohit Sharma’s Captaincy: A Hasty Decision?
Rohit Sharma’s time as India’s One Day International (ODI) captain has come to an end, with Shubman Gill stepping into the role ahead of the upcoming three-match series in Australia. Although the 38-year-old Sharma will remain with the squad, his position has been called into question by former Indian wicketkeeper Saba Karim. He expressed concerns about Rohit’s inclusion in the touring party, especially considering he may not be part of the planning for the 2027 World Cup.
Karim raised a significant point on the YouTube channel Kadak, asking, “If you haven’t made him the captain, then why are you still keeping him in the team?” He emphasized that this may indicate a lack of confidence in Rohit’s future with the team, suggesting that if the selectors do not see him as a part of their plans for 2027, they should not keep him in the squad at all. “Then whether he remains captain or not, or even a player or not, doesn’t really matter,” Karim added. He criticized the selectors for acting hastily regarding Rohit Sharma’s situation, stating there was no rationale for it.
India’s chief selector, Ajit Agarkar, explained that the selection of Rohit and Virat Kohli was based on their availability in this format but did not elaborate on their potential roles for the World Cup in 2027. “Obviously, with the captaincy change, that’s generally the thought,” he mentioned, indicating that while they were picked for now, the future was uncertain.
Agarkar also reiterated a prior rule that requires players to participate in domestic cricket whenever they are available. This guideline applies to both Rohit and Kohli, as he stated, “Whenever the guys are available, they should be playing domestic cricket. That’s the only way you’ll keep yourself sharp and playing cricket if you’ve got a long enough break.” Whether this will be feasible alongside international commitments remains to be seen. However, he underlined the importance of domestic play for maintaining form.
