Devastating Deluge in Darjeeling: PM Modi Vows Vigilance as Heavy Rains Claim 14 Lives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow on Sunday following a tragic incident in Darjeeling, where heavy rains and landslides claimed at least 14 lives and left several residents missing. The Prime Minister conveyed his condolences via a post on X, stating, “Deeply pained by the loss of lives due to a bridge mishap in Darjeeling. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.”
In light of the ongoing crisis, Modi assured the public that the government is closely monitoring the situation in Darjeeling and surrounding areas. “We are committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected,” he added. The incessant rain triggered multiple landslides across the picturesque hills of northern West Bengal on Saturday, resulting in significant destruction, including the loss of homes and severed access to remote villages.
Authorities reported fatalities from various locations, including Sarsaly, Jasbirgaon, Mirik Basti, Dhar Gaon (Mechi), Nagarakata, and the Mirik Lake area. Darjeeling Sub-Divisional Officer Richard Lepcha informed PTI that rescue operations are actively underway, supported by local police, disaster response teams, and the district administration. “The situation is challenging, but we are working tirelessly to aid those in need,” Lepcha stated.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has announced compensation for the victims; however, the specifics of the assistance have not yet been disclosed. She plans to visit north Bengal on October 6 to assess the ongoing circumstances, acknowledging that a large number of tourists have also been impacted by the disaster.
In a notable effort, rescuers managed to pull at least 40 people from the debris in Dhar Gaon and Nagarakata, where heavy mudslides have completely flattened several homes. The community is facing a daunting challenge as recovery personnel work to locate missing individuals and provide aid to those injured or displaced.
Officials continue to encourage residents to stay updated on weather reports and heed warnings as conditions remain volatile. As the situation develops, both state and central government agencies are committed to deploying resources and support to help affected families rebuild their lives amidst these challenging circumstances.
As the nation watches closely, the tragedy in Darjeeling underscores the urgent need for robust disaster preparedness in vulnerable regions. The commitment of both local and national authorities will be crucial in the coming days as the community comes together to recover from this devastating event.
