President Donald Trump is reportedly considering the dismissal of “thousands” of federal employees as the government shutdown enters its second day. The White House has revealed that these layoffs could primarily target agencies deemed misaligned with the administration’s priorities.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the media, stating, “It’s likely going to be in the thousands. [T]hat’s something that the Office of Management and Budget and the entire team at the White House here, again, is unfortunately having to work on today.” She further indicated that these discussions would not be taking place had Democrats voted to keep the government operational, emphasizing, “Those conversations would not be happening if the Democrats had voted to keep the government open.”
Leavitt made it clear that the White House is not interested in negotiations with the opposition: “We haven’t wanted to negotiate. We just want to keep the government open. That’s been the Republican and the Trump White House position since the very beginning.”
As part of the administration’s strategy, Trump announced plans to meet with Budget Director Russell Vought to determine which agencies will face cuts. “I can’t believe the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity,” Trump remarked, indicating his perspective on the situation. Leavitt hinted at a focus on agencies the administration views as “a waste of taxpayer dollars” or not aligned with its values, aligning with Project 2025-a conservative blueprint advocating for significant reductions in federal government operations.
The potential layoffs come on the heels of decisions to freeze funding for federal transit and green energy programs in Democratic-leaning states. In a bold move, Trump has threatened further firings and may push to eliminate 300,000 federal positions by the end of the year.

Senate Republican leader John Thune has stated it is “unlikely” the chamber will conduct votes over the weekend, while the House will reconvene on Tuesday.
