Controversy Erupts in Tripura: FIR Against Creator for Insulting PM Modi
Tripura Police have initiated a case against digital content creator Madhabi Biswas for allegedly making derogatory remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a social media post. Biswas, hailing from Pratapgarh within the East Agartala police jurisdiction, criticized the Prime Minister’s recent visit to the Maa Tripura Sundari temple in Gomati district on September 22.
In a video she posted on September 25, Biswas questioned the purpose of the Prime Minister’s visit during Navratri, suggesting that public funds were wasted on a brief, 35-minute stay. She remarked that the Prime Minister “could have offered prayers online from Delhi instead of visiting the temple for just 35 minutes.” The authenticity of this video has not been independently verified.
The video gained significant traction online, prompting a police complaint from Rahul Bhattacharjee, a leader of the Yuva Morcha. According to Subrata Debnath, officer-in-charge of the East Agartala police station, a case was registered against Biswas following a court’s approval, and an investigation is currently underway.
Additionally, a separate complaint was lodged at the West Agartala police station by a leader of the Mohila Morcha (BJP), which also targeted Biswas for her comments about the Prime Minister. Rana Chatterjee, the officer-in-charge of the West Agartala police station, confirmed that they have sought court permission to file a First Information Report (FIR) against her.
This incident has sparked broader discussions regarding the nature of online criticism toward public figures and the implications of legal action against social media posts in Tripura.
