Sunil Joshi Appointed as Spin Bowling Coach at BCCI Centre of Excellence
Former India spinner Sunil Joshi is set to become the new spin bowling coach at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru, starting October 1. The 55-year-old has recently been involved in the Duleep Trophy and served as a part of the India A team during their matches against Australia A in Lucknow.
Joshi previously worked as a member of the Punjab Kings coaching staff under Ricky Ponting in the Indian Premier League (IPL). His departure will require PBKS to find a replacement for the assistant coach position.
Several candidates were in the running for the CoE role earlier this year, but Joshi’s strong coaching credentials ultimately secured him the position over competitors such as Rakesh Dhruv and Nooshin Al Khadeer, who currently coaches the India U-19 women’s team. Beyond his IPL experience, Joshi has also served as the spin bowling consultant for the Bangladesh national team and has coached Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket.
Before Joshi’s appointment, Sairaj Bahutale held the spin bowling coach position at the CoE, formerly known as the National Cricket Academy (NCA). He left to take on a similar role with the Rajasthan Royals ahead of the 2025 IPL season.
In March, the BCCI announced it was accepting applications for the CoE role, describing it as crucial for developing India’s spin bowling talent across all formats and age groups, including senior teams and various youth squads. In his new role, Joshi will collaborate closely with CoE Head VVS Laxman to identify and nurture future spin talent, as well as provide ongoing training and support to current Indian team spinners and those at the CoE.
