Inside Trump’s Secret Meeting with Shehbaz and Munir: What We Know
Pakistan’s Army Chief, General Asim Munir, met with President Donald Trump again at the White House, and this time, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also joined the conversation. However, the specific topics discussed between the leaders remain undisclosed.
According to reports, Prime Minister Sharif arrived at the White House shortly before 5 PM on Thursday. The Pakistani delegation departed at approximately 6:18 PM, but no photos of the meeting have been released by the American side; any images that have surfaced were shared by Pakistani journalists.
The meeting between Sharif and Trump was conducted privately, with no media allowed to attend. General Munir accompanied Sharif during this visit, highlighting the significance of this meeting given the current geopolitical context.
This encounter follows a commercial agreement announced between the two countries in July, marking a significant diplomatic engagement. Recently, Trump and Sharif also had an informal meeting at a gathering of Arab Muslim nations.
Previously, during the announcement of the commercial agreement, Trump indicated that the U.S. would collaborate with Pakistan to enhance its oil reserves. He noted that “India will be buying oil from Pakistan in the future,” while maintaining a distance from the India-Pakistan conflict.
In a recent press conference, a journalist inquired about the “big deal” related to Trump and Pakistan to U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright. In response, Wright stated that he had no updates on the situation. The journalist reminded him that Trump had talked about U.S. companies extracting oil from Pakistan’s large energy reserves and asked about the progress of mutual cooperation in this area.
Wright acknowledged the journalist’s question, stating, “I haven’t yet spoken with any American companies or delved into this matter in detail. However, based on your question, I will investigate this further. I was involved in gas extraction in Pakistan 30 years ago, and everyone knows that there are vast natural gas reserves in the country. Unfortunately, investment has decreased, leading to a decline in gas production; however, those reserves still exist.”
He expressed enthusiasm regarding Trump’s statements and indicated that the U.S. government and its companies would be interested in partnership opportunities with Pakistan. “We will seek ways to increase fuel production from Pakistan,” he added, promising to look into the matter more thoroughly.
It is noteworthy that General Asim Munir visited the U.S. twice in the past month following Operation Sindh, which has sparked speculation. After Trump announced the fuel deal with Pakistan, Munir claimed back home that Pakistan could earn $2 billion annually from mineral extraction in Balochistan. However, there has been no noticeable progress in finding these minerals or oil.
