Transforming Healthcare: Manipur’s Bold Initiatives for Nursing Education
In a pivotal decision aimed at enhancing healthcare and medical education, the Governor-in-Council of Manipur approved the creation of several new nursing institutions and research facilities across the state on Monday. This initiative comes under the Central Sector Scheme for the Development of Nursing Services, which will see the establishment of two B.Sc Nursing colleges in Thoubal and Churachandpur.
Furthermore, another B.Sc Nursing college will be introduced in Churachandpur under the Central Sponsored Scheme titled “Augmenting Nursing Education – Establishment of New Colleges of Nursing (Co-located with Medical Colleges).” To complement these efforts, two new state-funded General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) schools will also be launched in Thoubal and Churachandpur, replacing existing institutions that will be phased out as part of an upgrade process.
Currently, Manipur hosts 14 GNM schools-two government and 12 private-capable of accommodating 519 students, yet more than 800 qualified applicants vie for these spots each year. In addition, the state has 16 B.Sc Nursing colleges, comprising two public and 14 private institutions with a total of 610 available seats, against an annual demand exceeding 1,600 applications. The new colleges are projected to fill a significant gap, addressing a 40% shortfall in GNM courses and a 64% deficit in B.Sc Nursing seats. This expansion aims to produce more trained nurses and improve access to quality healthcare, particularly in rural and underserved communities. The initiatives are also expected to create job opportunities and empower young individuals, particularly women, with the professional skills necessary for local and international careers.
Additionally, the Governor-in-Council approved a notable increase in the stipend for undergraduate interns (MBBS and BDS) at JNIMS, raising it from Rs 15,210 to Rs 25,000. This adjustment marks the first change since 2015, addressing financial burdens experienced by medical and dental students.
The Council has also authorized the recruitment of personnel for establishing a Multi-Disciplinary Research Unit (MRU) at JNIMS. This unit, funded under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare’s health research infrastructure initiative, will serve as a platform for biomedical innovation, clinical studies, and evidence-based healthcare solutions, enhancing the institution’s capacity for advanced research and improving public health outcomes.
By bolstering nursing education, research infrastructure, and student support, these initiatives aim to position Manipur as a center for skilled healthcare professionals and medical advancement while promoting socio-economic development and ensuring a healthier future for the state’s population.
