Rising Dementia Crisis in Guntur: Urgent Call for Awareness and Action
Lalitha Group of Hospitals held an awareness program on Saturday to observe World Alzheimer’s Day, which is recognized globally on September 21. The event aimed to educate the public about dementia and its impacts. Led by Dr. Vijaya, the head of the Neurology Department, the program featured faculty from both neurology and psychiatry.
Dr. Vijaya emphasized the increasing burden of dementia in India, noting that 7.4 percent of individuals over 60-approximately 8.8 million people-are currently affected. She warned that these figures are anticipated to double by 2030 and triple by 2050. On a global scale, a new case of dementia is diagnosed every three seconds, which highlights the urgent need for awareness and action.
The event included talks from senior neurologists and psychiatrists who discussed the symptoms, risk factors, and treatments related to dementia, as well as the psychological challenges faced by patients and families. The panel strongly advocated for prevention strategies focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, balanced nutrition, mental stimulation, social engagement, and effective stress management.
More than 150 patients and members of the community attended the program, engaging actively with the experts. The event served as a vital platform for raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and encouraging proactive measures for prevention and care.
