Teesta Water Overflow: Disruption Strikes Darjeeling’s Key Route
The main route connecting Kalimpong and Sikkim to Darjeeling was closed for several hours on Monday morning due to an overflow of water from the Teesta River. This disruption was mainly caused by heavy rainfall that began Sunday night, which led to a rise in the river’s water level and subsequent flooding on the roads.
The flooding primarily affected the Teesta Bazaar area, prompting local authorities to close the road as a precaution. The closure lasted from 7 AM to 11 AM, after which the road was reopened as the water began to recede. However, rainfall persisted throughout the day, only easing by the evening.
Despite the flooding, NH-10, the primary highway linking Sikkim and Kalimpong to Siliguri, remained accessible, with no landslides reported along this route. In contrast, the Lodhama area experienced significant damage due to landslides, with several homes in Ward 1 and Ward 2 affected. Residents Pramod Rai and Prem Kumar Rai reported partial damage to their houses.
Pramod’s property suffered damage, and he lost one of his cows, while Prem Kumar’s dwelling also sustained harm. Additionally, another resident, Banbas Rai, reported that his pig shed was washed away. The main road connecting the Rimbick-Lodhama area, including Chhota Hatta, is completely blocked due to landslides, complicating access for local residents.
