India Supports UN Resolution for Palestine: A Step Towards Peaceful Two-State Solution
India voted in favor of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution on September 12, endorsing the New York Declaration aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the Palestine question and supporting the implementation of a two-state solution. The resolution, introduced by France, received overwhelming backing, with 142 nations voting in favor, 10 opposed, and 12 abstaining. India’s support aligns it with Gulf Arab states, while the nations voting against included Israel and the United States, among others.
The declaration, first presented during a high-level conference co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia at UN headquarters in July, seeks to revive negotiations that have long stalled in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This vote marks a significant shift in India’s stance; previously, over the past three years, New Delhi had abstained from voting on several Gaza-related resolutions, particularly those calling for a ceasefire. India’s recent decision indicates a stronger commitment to global efforts for a negotiated two-state solution.
The New York Declaration outlines collective international actions aimed at ending the conflict in Gaza, establishing a just settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian issue, and fostering peace for all stakeholders in the region. It condemns the October 7 Hamas attacks that resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and the taking of over 250 hostages. Concurrently, it criticizes Israel’s military responses in Gaza, which have led to significant civilian casualties, destruction of infrastructure, and severe humanitarian conditions.
The declaration calls on Israel to publicly commit to the two-state solution and recognize the sovereignty of a Palestinian state. It stresses the need to halt violence against Palestinians, cease all settlement expansions, and refrain from annexation activities, especially in East Jerusalem. The document also highlights the Palestinians’ right to self-determination and warns that failure to make decisive steps toward a two-state solution could exacerbate the conflict and hinder regional peace.
In a statement emphasizing the urgency of the situation, the declaration asserts, “The war in Gaza must end now. Gaza is an integral part of a Palestinian State and must be unified with the West Bank. There must be no occupation, siege, territorial reduction, or forced displacement.”
