Russia has announced its readiness to roll out Enteromix as a personalized cancer vaccine after successful development using mRNA technology akin to COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccine utilizes four harmless viruses to activate the immune response specifically targeting tumors, aiming to reduce tumor size and slow down cancer cell proliferation. Initially aimed at colorectal cancer-a leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally-researchers are also working on variants for glioblastoma and melanoma.
Early trials have demonstrated encouraging results. In a study involving 48 participants, Veronika Skvortsova, head of Russia’s Federal Medical and Biological Agency (FMBA), reported tumor size reductions between 60% and 80%. The findings also suggested that patients experienced halted tumor growth, improved survival rates, and no severe adverse reactions, affirming the vaccine’s safety and efficacy across multiple administrations. Interest in Enteromix surged when it was unveiled at the 10th Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok, attracting over 8,400 delegates from 75 countries.
Enteromix distinguishes itself from conventional cancer treatments, which often damage healthy cells and result in debilitating side effects like nausea and hair loss. By training the immune system to recognize cancer cells as threats, this immunotherapy approach potentially allows for a far less painful treatment experience.
