Dibrugarh’s Traffic Diversion Sparks Concerns Amid Amolapatty Flyover Construction
Dibrugarh district commissioner Bikram Kairi has announced a significant traffic diversion plan as the city gears up for the construction of the 1.47-kilometer Amolapatty Junction flyover. This comprehensive order, issued on Saturday, includes alternative routes aimed at maintaining smooth traffic flow during the construction of the ₹158 crore infrastructure project.
The diversion primarily impacts heavy motor vehicles (HMVs) and ambulances traveling to and from Amolapatty Junction and Assam Medical College & Hospital (AMCH), two of Dibrugarh’s busiest areas. Under the new routing, HMVs and ambulances coming from Jorhat and Dhemaji will be redirected from Barbaruah BCPL Round Circle via NH-15, continuing through Jagannath Temple and Bokul Flyover before reaching AT Road. Vehicles arriving from the Tinsukia side will take a different route, being diverted through the Chaolkhowa area and passing Murlidhar Jalan Bus Terminus before entering the city.
Additionally, the order delineates exit routes. Vehicles departing Dibrugarh for Jorhat and Dhemaji will be channeled through AT Road towards Bokul Flyover and BCPL Round Circle, while those heading to Tinsukia will use AT Road via Lahowal. Commissioner Kairi emphasized the thoughtful design of this traffic diversion plan, stating that it aims to minimize disruption while ensuring that emergency vehicles can access medical facilities quickly. He urged the public to cooperate by following the alternative routes during the project, acknowledging that some initial inconvenience is expected but asserting that it is vital for addressing long-term traffic congestion in the city.
The Amolapatty Junction flyover represents a key element of a larger infrastructural initiative for Dibrugarh. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 26. On that same day, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the laying of foundation stones for three other flyovers: an 814-meter flyover near Doordarshan Kendra on Mancotta Road (₹84 crore), a 1.48-kilometer connecting flyover at the Lahowal-Bordubi-Tinsukia Road and NH-37 junction (₹70 crore), and a 651-meter flyover on the Lezai-Kalakhowa road (₹62 crore).
Collectively, this network of four flyovers, which amounts to an investment of over ₹374 crore, is strategically designed to alleviate congestion at major entry and exit points within Dibrugarh.
