India–Thailand Joint Military Exercise Maitree-XIV Launches in Meghalaya!
The 14th edition of the India-Thailand joint military exercise, Maitree-XIV, commenced at Umroi on September 3 and will run until September 14. This exercise is part of the ongoing “military-to-military exchange programme” between the two nations. Defence officials indicated that the primary goal of this exercise is to enhance collaboration, interoperability, and mutual understanding between the Indian Army and the Royal Thai Army.
Focused on “company-level counter-terrorist operations in semi-urban terrain,” the joint exercise aligns with Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The Indian Army’s participation includes 120 personnel from the Madras Regiment, while the Royal Thai Army is represented by 53 personnel from the 1st Infantry Battalion and the 14th Infantry Brigade.
The two-week programme encompasses a range of activities, including tactical drills, joint planning, special skills training, physical fitness, and raiding operations. It will culminate in a 48-hour validation exercise designed to simulate realistic operational scenarios.
Since its inception in 2006, this military exercise has become a significant aspect of bilateral training, reaffirming the commitment of both armies to promote peace, stability, and security in the region. The previous edition of Maitree was held at Fort Vachiraprakan in Tak Province, Thailand.
