Rising Cancer Cases in Northeast: What Recent Surveys Reveal!
India is experiencing a rapid increase in cancer cases, now ranking as the second most cancer-stricken country globally. According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s GLOBOCAN 2022 report, approximately 1.4 million people in India have been diagnosed with cancer, with over 900,000 deaths attributed to the disease in the same period. Recent research highlights the alarming situation surrounding this deadly illness.
A worrying report from Java Network, dated August 20, 2025, indicates that around 11% of India’s population is facing cancer. Analysis from the National Cancer Registry Program’s investigator group reveals data from over 700,000 cancer patients and 200,000 deceased individuals, underscoring that cancer is not merely a health issue but a significant public health challenge.
Particularly noteworthy is the cancer rate in Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, where 256 men and 217 women per 100,000 people are diagnosed with cancer. Several districts in Northeast India are severely impacted by this disease, alongside Kashmir Valley and Kerala, where cancer rates are also high. In Hyderabad, 154 women per 100,000 are registered as cancer patients.
The situation in Delhi is especially concerning, with nearly 3,000 new cases of acute myeloid leukemia being registered each year, primarily among individuals aged 30 to 40. The rise in lung cancer cases can be attributed to air pollution and toxic particulate matter like PM 2.5. In addition, changing lifestyles, poor dietary habits, and a lack of timely screenings contribute to this growing issue.
Northeast India sees a prevalence of esophageal and stomach cancers, while breast and oral cancers are more common in urban areas, and cervical cancer rates are elevated in rural regions.
Key factors driving the increase in cancer cases include air pollution, particularly in metropolitan areas like Delhi; unhealthy lifestyle choices such as poor diet, smoking, alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity; population growth and aging demographics; and the lack of timely diagnosis and treatment.
To combat cancer, essential measures include adopting healthier dietary habits, refraining from smoking and drinking, undergoing regular medical check-ups and screenings, implementing collective actions to reduce environmental pollution, and improving healthcare systems and awareness.
It is crucial to take timely action to curb this increase in cancer cases. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and ensuring regular screenings can significantly reduce the impact of this disease.
