Empowering Naga Unity: MP Jamir Advocates for Lasting Political Solutions
Nagaland’s Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), S Supongmeren Jamir, highlighted the crucial need for unity in achieving a political solution for the Naga people during the introductory session of the 31st General Conference of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) on August 27 at the RSA Ground in Tseminyu. He emphasized the importance of coming together under one umbrella to envision a shared future. “We must ask ourselves what is our vision for the future?” Jamir questioned, critiquing the irony of discussing unity while facing internal discord, which he termed a significant issue requiring self-reflection.
The three-day conference is organized under the theme “Resilience in Transition” by the Rengma Students’ Union. Jamir also addressed the advancements in Nagaland’s education sector, noting the establishment of a medical college in Kohima and an upcoming one in Mon, while lamenting the absence of an engineering institution in the state. He acknowledged the contributions of both past and present NSF leaders, pointing out that the Federation has cultivated leaders across various fields, including politics, administration, entrepreneurship, and local governance, indicating its vital role in community development.
Furthermore, Jamir stressed the need to reform the NSF election process to improve the Federation’s credibility. He urged students and leaders alike to develop a clear vision for meaningful lives, asserting, “Without vision, both in life and in organisations, parents will lose hope and students will lose confidence in leadership.” He articulated the necessity for commitment, asserting that it must originate from within individuals.
Emphasizing the values of character and humility, he advised against creating superficial connections and instead encouraged kindness towards friends and family, underscoring the importance of respecting elders and leaders. Atokiho Sumi, former Vice President of the NSF, chaired the program, which began with an invocation by Besüvoto Rhakho, Pastor of CRC Chozuba Town. A welcome address was delivered by Benjamin Lorin, Convener COLA, followed by greetings from Nuheymong Yimkhiung, President of the Eastern Naga Students’ Federation, and Er Tesinlo Semy, President of the Rengma Hoho. The session concluded with self-introductions from candidates aspiring for the 2025–27 tenure and a report from the General Secretary, Chumben Khuvung. The conference has attracted 1,288 delegates, marking a significant gathering for the Nagaland community.
