BNP Warns: Boycotting Elections May Lead to Political Isolation
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a warning against any opposition to the upcoming general elections, stating that dissenters will be excluded from future political roles in the country. BNP Standing Committee Member Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that any debates regarding the elections would be settled in the political arena itself, asserting, “Those who speak against the elections will be eliminated from politics.” He acknowledged that while any political party may choose not to participate in the elections, those who attempt to unjustifiably boycott will ultimately fall behind in future political dynamics.
Salahuddin criticized the calls for a Proportional Representation (PR) system and a Constituent Assembly, labeling them as mere political tactics intended to disrupt the electoral process. He remarked that the sentiment for elections is strong in the country, and anyone opposing this will face political marginalization. Furthermore, he indicated that the BNP views certain provisions of the July Charter as unreasonable and suggested that the party would engage in discussions with alternative proposals during the National Consensus Commission’s meetings.
He underscored the importance of adhering to the established constitutional framework, stating, “Nothing can be placed above the constitution. Political parties will reach consensus through discussions.” Salahuddin affirmed the BNP’s commitment to avoiding complications in the national election under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. He noted that this government was formed by consensus and expressed the need to restore the caretaker system for future elections. He insisted that the upcoming elections must occur within the stated timeline, leaving no room for delays.
In terms of alliances, Salahuddin dismissed the possibility of joining forces with the radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami ahead of the elections. However, he mentioned that a collaboration with certain political entities, including some that are “pro-Islamic,” involved in their joint initiatives might be possible. Recently, Jamaat has threatened that the national elections cannot proceed unless the interim government addresses their essential demands, which include electoral reforms and the implementation of a level playing field alongside a PR system.
Bangladesh has been navigating significant uncertainty regarding its next general elections since the overthrow of the Awami League government, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, amid violent protests last year. Currently, the parties that once aligned with Yunus to depose Hasina find themselves in conflict over reform proposals and the scheduling of the next elections.
