Indian Centre Unveils ₹100 Commemorative Coin Celebrating Bhupen Hazarika
GUWAHATI: The central government has approved the release of a ₹100 commemorative coin to celebrate the birth centenary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, a revered figure in Indian music and culture. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on August 27 that the Ministry of Finance has issued the official gazette notification regarding this initiative.
Sarma described the coin as a “timeless recognition” of Dr. Hazarika’s contributions and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for honoring the famed musician, thereby enhancing the significance of the centenary celebrations. The prime minister is scheduled to formally release the coin during his visit to Guwahati on September 12-13.
The centenary event will take place at the Khanapara Veterinary College playground starting at 5 PM. Attendees can expect ceremonial honors and cultural tributes that reflect Dr. Hazarika’s diverse legacy as a singer, composer, poet, and thinker.
In addition to the coin launch, the prime minister will unveil biographies of Dr. Hazarika in several Indian languages. This initiative aims to highlight the wide cultural and linguistic themes present in his work, which often emphasized unity, social justice, and humanity.
A key attraction of the evening will be a 23-minute Grand Chorus performance featuring 1,000 student singers from colleges across Assam, celebrating the rich cultural heritage inspired by Dr. Hazarika’s artistry.
