Rhino Horn Carcass Discovered: A Desperate Call to Protect Pobitora Sanctuary
The carcass of a male rhinoceros, with its horn intact, was discovered in the Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam’s Morigaon district on Friday evening, according to forest officials. Authorities suggest the rhino may have died from natural causes, possibly due to old age or injuries sustained during fights. The carcass was found near the Tulpung Anti-Poaching Camp during routine patrol activities. Officials confirmed that the rhino’s horn remained untouched and has been secured for safekeeping.
Range Officer Panjal Baruah indicated that a post-mortem examination will be carried out by a veterinarian to determine the precise cause of death. This incident is highlighted against the backdrop of an awareness campaign titled “Conservation and Coexistence,” which is organized by the biodiversity group Aaranyak in partnership with the Forest Department, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and various other collaborators.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, which houses over 107 one-horned rhinoceroses, is renowned for its high density of this species globally. As part of the ongoing campaign, students, teachers, villagers, and tourists engaged in educational programs emphasizing the sanctuary’s rich biodiversity, the threats posed by floods and habitat degradation, and the significance of conservation efforts.
Forest officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting rhinos in Pobitora, underscoring that, despite the ongoing challenges, vigilant measures are in place to ensure the security of this vital wildlife habitat in Assam.
