Shocking Claims: AAP Alleges Police Concealed CCTV in Gupta Attack Case
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) state president Saurabh Bhardwaj has accused the Delhi Police of concealing crucial CCTV footage related to the recent attack on Chief Minister Rekha Gupta during a public hearing at her Civil Lines camp office. Speaking to reporters, Bhardwaj expressed concern that while an FIR was promptly filed in Gupta’s case, a similar commitment was lacking in previous physical assaults on former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. “We are relieved that in Rekha Gupta’s case, the police have registered an FIR, but I believe they are hiding the CCTV footage to cover up their failures,” he stated.
Bhardwaj reflected on past incidents where Kejriwal faced physical attacks during public events, noting the lack of accessible footage from Gupta’s incident, contrasting it with well-documented assaults on Kejriwal that were widely shared. He criticized the police for not recording earlier attacks on Kejriwal as attempts on his life and for failing to detain the culprits. He indicated these cases were met with negligence and described as expressions of public frustration, unlike the prompt response in Gupta’s case.
The previous day, Bhardwaj underscored his disappointment over Gupta’s attack, asserting that violence is unacceptable in society and contradicts the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. He questioned those fostering a culture of violence, pointing out that it extends beyond political assaults to instances where police acted violently towards SSC students and educators. He also revisited a previous incident involving a BJP supporter attacking Kejriwal during an election campaign, recalling how BJP leaders downplayed the aggression by claiming that the attacker was merely an upset citizen.
Bhardwaj emphasized that while the BJP attributed Kejriwal’s incidents to public discontent, they could not claim that the people of Delhi were similarly upset with Gupta to justify the attack. “An attack on anyone is wrong. We stand with the BJP now because, fundamentally, violence is unacceptable, and all political factions should denounce such acts,” he asserted in a video message.
The attack on Gupta occurred Wednesday morning during her weekly Jan Sunwai session and has been characterized by the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office as part of a “well-planned conspiracy to kill her.” Following the attack, Gupta received medical attention and was subsequently discharged. Police have identified the assailant as Rajesh Sakriya Khimjibhai, 41, from Rajkot, Gujarat. He is currently in five-day police custody, with investigations involving the Special Cell, Intelligence Bureau, and local law enforcement assessing his mobile and social media for potential connections to the assault.
