Urgent Call to Action: Islanders Unite to Build Parallel Bridges for a Stronger Future!
Traffic congestion on the Goshree bridges remains relentless, with just 12 days left in a 25-day deadline for the completion of restoration work on the parallel bridge to the second Goshree bridge. Residents have faced this disruption for over two months, exacerbated by the poor condition of the first and second Goshree bridges, which are riddled with potholes. The situation became particularly dire on Saturday, as vehicles formed long queues stretching back from High Court Junction.
In response to the ongoing traffic crisis, an all-party delegation, organized by the Federation of Residents Associations Apex Council in Goshree Islands (FRAG), is set to meet with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Their goal is to advocate for the rapid construction of parallel bridges adjacent to both the first and third Goshree bridges. This decision was made during a recent gathering of local body leaders, elected representatives, and FRAG members, which included presidents from various blocks such as Mulavukad, Elamkunnapuzha, and Nayarambalam.
Anil Plavians, general secretary of FRAG, expressed optimism, noting that the Goshree Islands Development Authority has already allocated funds and acquired land for the planned parallel bridges. Currently, only the second Goshree bridge features a parallel structure, which has left commuters facing significant delays.
The restoration timeline has raised concerns among residents. Plavians stated, “If the restoration of the parallel bridge is not completed as agreed within 25 days, we will completely block the movement of containers and lay siege to the toll plaza at Mulavukad.” In addition, he mentioned that work to fill potholes on the first and second bridges is expected to begin once rain subsides.
Despite FRAG’s call for a complete ban on container traffic during peak hours, authorities have opted for a compromise. Containers are permitted through the Goshree bridges from the terminal and three container stations every 20 minutes. However, this arrangement has led to instances where vehicles become stuck, resulting in traffic delays that can last upwards of an hour.
The ongoing traffic issues have caused significant frustration among island residents, who are eager for a resolution. As the deadline for the bridge restoration approaches, the pressure mounts on local authorities to ensure timely completion of the necessary repairs and improvements.
With discussions ongoing and plans for future infrastructure enhancements in motion, the community remains hopeful that their voices will be heard, paving the way for smoother commutes and improved conditions across the Goshree bridges.
