Unveiling the Bengal Files: Trailer Release Sparks Kolkata Excitement!

Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri has released the trailer for his anticipated film, The Bengal Files, on social media, following chaos that disrupted its official launch in Kolkata just a day prior. The film takes a deep dive into the tumultuous 1940s in undivided Bengal, highlighting the communal violence stemming from events like Direct Action Day in 1946 and the Noakhali riots. Agnihotri, who gained prominence with his previous work, The Kashmir Files, collaborates again with Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, and Darshan Kumaar for this project.

The trailer begins with a powerful monologue about Bengal’s landscape before Partition, transitioning to stark and intense representations of riots in Kolkata. One particular scene depicts Bengal as India’s “lighthouse,” symbolizing resistance to Partition. The preview is marked by graphic visuals of violence and killings, underscoring the film’s grim themes.

While sharing the trailer online, Agnihotri noted that its release serves to commemorate the victims of Direct Action Day on August 16, 1946. He labeled the film as “the boldest ever on the untold story of the Hindu genocide.”

The Kolkata launch faced significant obstacles, with organizers at ITC Royal Bengal reportedly halting the event despite having received prior permissions. Agnihotri accused local authorities of attempting to obstruct the screening, asserting that wires were cut and equipment was sabotaged. “If this is not dictatorship, then what is? Law and order has failed,” he stated decisively to the audience.

Scheduled for release in theaters on September 5, 2025, The Bengal Files aims to shed light on a dark chapter in history, capturing the struggles and tragedies that unfolded during that era.
