United for a Drug-Free Arunachal: Minister Calls for Collective Action
ITANAGAR, 14 Aug: Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kento Jini emphasized Arunachal Pradesh’s dedication to becoming a drug-free state, urging for a comprehensive community effort that starts at home, develops in educational institutions, and continues through compassionate rehabilitation. Speaking at the 5th anniversary celebration of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan (NMBA) at the state banquet hall, Jini highlighted the Indian government’s proactive measures to combat substance abuse through various initiatives.
He outlined essential strategies targeting vulnerable districts, which include spreading awareness and providing counseling and treatment. The goal is to decrease drug demand and rehabilitate users, addressing the considerable impact of substance abuse on individuals and society.
Jini mentioned that various agencies and committees at the central, state, and district levels are collaborating to implement drug demand reduction policies. However, he acknowledged the challenges posed by stigma and discrimination against users, as well as securing sustainable funding for rehabilitation efforts. Current initiatives focus on preventing drug use, offering treatment options, and aiding individuals in reintegrating into society.
Encouraging students to embrace diligence and avoid addiction, the minister stated, “There are no shortcuts to success; successful individuals have overcome struggles through hard work.” SJETA Secretary Abu Tayeng noted that the Indian government has been running the Nashambhu Bharath Abhiyaan nationwide for five years to promote a drug-free India. This campaign includes grassroots awareness initiatives, rehabilitation support, and community engagement.
Tayeng also announced the launch of a 31-day campaign intended to reinforce community participation and relevant messaging. He pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh has a high prevalence of drug abuse, highlighting the need to foster healthier choices and lifestyles. He emphasized that everyone plays a vital role in cultivating a drug-free Arunachal through awareness and proactive measures.
ICR Deputy Commissioner Toko Babu shared how the district administration and local police are working diligently to tackle the drug crisis in the state, particularly in the capital region. Femina Miss Arunachal Tadu Lunia remarked on the prevalence of addiction, stating, “I believe everyone I know has encountered someone affected by addiction.” She underscored that addiction is widespread in both the state and the country, revealing that existing prevention initiatives are not sufficient.
Lunia pointed to factors such as peer pressure, mental health issues, and lack of guidance as contributing to the rise in substance abuse. She raised concerns about the associated challenges, including HIV, and noted the need to address the motives of drug peddlers, who often prioritize profit over individual and societal harm. Lunia urged students to act as agents of change, reminding them that while they may feel powerless, they can contribute to awareness and foster acceptance to create a better world.
The program also featured awards in cash and certificates for winners of an essay writing competition from Don Bosco School and Mallo Tarin Higher Secondary School.
