Sikkim’s Journey to Empowerment: A Vision for Self-Reliance and Strength
Governor Om Prakash Mathur of Sikkim has conveyed heartfelt greetings to the people of Sikkim as India commemorates its 79th Independence Day. This occasion holds profound significance for all Indians, allowing them to honor the countless freedom fighters who displayed unwavering bravery and made ultimate sacrifices to secure the invaluable gift of freedom, as highlighted by the Governor in his message.
During his address, the Governor expressed deep gratitude to the Armed Forces for their steadfast courage and dedication in preserving the nation’s freedom and security. He noted the recent success of Operation Sindoor, emphasizing that this achievement has not only instilled pride in the nation but has also elevated India’s standing globally as a symbol of courage and resolve.
This year’s Independence Day is particularly meaningful for Sikkim as it marks the Golden Jubilee of Sikkim Statehood. Governor Mathur reflected on the journey of Sikkim over the past 50 years, stating that with support from the Union Government and a resilient public, the state has emerged as one of India’s most progressive and environmentally conscious regions.
The Governor pinpointed the crucial partnership with the Government of India, stating that key national programs have significantly transformed Sikkim, impacting every corner from the northern mountains to the southern valleys. He underscored that special financial aid and policy support from various Indian ministries have propelled projects that might otherwise have remained unfulfilled aspirations.
Sikkim is now recognized as a clean, green, and inclusive state. Nonetheless, Governor Mathur stressed that the journey is not complete. He spoke about the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to build a strong, self-reliant, and sustainable nation and state. He noted that the goal of a “Sunaulo, Samriddha, ani Samartha” Sikkim serves as a roadmap for inclusive growth, cultural pride, climate resilience, and human development.
On this Independence Day, the Governor reaffirmed a commitment to strengthening governance through innovation, transparency, and accountability. He pledged to invest in the youth, empower women, and modernize infrastructure, ensuring no citizen is left behind. The policies will align with the national mission, as Sikkim’s advancement is intertwined with that of India.
Highlighting ongoing developments, the Governor recognized the assistance from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Ministry of Railways, and the Ministry of Civil Aviation, which have all enhanced connectivity in Sikkim and with the broader country. The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana has notably improved access to rural areas, linking remote villages to essential services.
He also remarked on the steady advancement of rail connectivity in Sikkim through the Sivok–Rangpo railway project and the enhancements in urban infrastructure achieved under various schemes, which help to strengthen the state’s infrastructure and public services.
This collaboration between central investment and state implementation is reshaping Sikkim’s physical and digital landscape, making it more accessible and resilient. As the Tricolor was hoisted, the Governor invited all to remember the sacrifices of those who came before, urging unity and dedication towards building a harmonious, progressive Sikkim that contributes proudly to the making of a great India.
