BRO Unveils Sangkhalang Bridge, Reviving Crucial Link in North Sikkim
On August 13, 2025, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) inaugurated the new Sangkhalang Bridge in Dzongu, North Sikkim, restoring crucial connectivity across the Teesta River. The bridge, constructed under the BRO’s Project Swastik, serves as a vital link for the Mangan–Chungthang corridor, ensuring access to remote areas like Dzongu, Lachen, and Lachung. Dzongu MLA Pintso Namgyal Lepcha, who also holds the position of Forest Minister, officiated the inauguration alongside local and BRO officials.
This high-altitude project was completed in an impressive five months, despite the challenging conditions of extreme weather and difficult terrain. Engineers faced powerful river currents, unstable riverbanks, and complex logistical issues to deliver the modular structure quickly. The Sangkhalang Bridge spans 230 feet and can support a load of up to 40 tons, marking it as a permanent addition to the region’s infrastructure.
With the bridge now operational, essential supplies, emergency services, and tourism to the upper reaches of North Sikkim are expected to resume smoothly, providing a significant boost to local economies and contributing to regional stability. This project underscores the dedication of BRO personnel and the importance of maintaining connectivity in this remote Himalayan region.
