New Medical Units at Mairang Hospital: A Lifesaving Initiative for Mothers and Infants in Meghalaya
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma inaugurated vital healthcare facilities at Tirot Sing Memorial Hospital in Mairang, marking a key advancement in the state’s medical infrastructure aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality rates. The newly opened facilities feature a 26-bedded Sick Newborn Care Unit (SNCU), a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an Adult ICU, and a High Dependency Unit. These developments fill a significant gap in local healthcare services, allowing residents to access intensive care without needing to travel to urban centers.
“This significant addition to the hospital’s infrastructure will provide much-needed intensive care services to residents of the area, who previously had to travel to urban centers for such treatment,” Sangma commented on Twitter. The state government has allocated over Rs 300 crores specifically for improvements within the healthcare sector, prioritizing maternal and child health services. This investment is part of a broader strategy aimed at lowering Meghalaya’s Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) and Infant Mortality Rate (IMR), while also enhancing overall life expectancy in the state.
These upgraded medical facilities reflect the government’s commitment to making quality healthcare accessible to rural populations. The introduction of the SNCU and pediatric ICU is particularly crucial, as specialized care for newborns and children has previously been limited in the region.
During his visit, community leader Marborsing Marbaniang also inaugurated the Block Integrated Development Complex for Mairang C&RD Block. The government has approved over Rs 2,500 crores for enhancements to administrative infrastructure statewide.
“With over Rs 2,500 crores sanctioned for administrative infrastructure, we are not only strengthening governance mechanisms but also bringing administration closer to the people,” Chief Minister Sangma explained.
These dual inaugurations exemplify the state’s integrated development approach, uniting healthcare improvements with updates to administrative infrastructure. The inauguration of the Mairang Block Office is part of a larger initiative to enhance all Block Offices across Meghalaya.
