Meghalaya Embraces Tradition: Legalizing Fermented Beverage Production
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that the state Cabinet has approved a new regulation permitting the legal production and sale of traditional alcoholic beverages, contingent upon proper licensing. This rule specifically applies to fermented local drinks that are traditionally crafted by indigenous communities throughout the state, such as bitchi. However, it does not encompass distilled liquor, which remains categorized separately.
Following the Cabinet meeting, Sangma highlighted the lack of a legal framework to govern or support traditional fermented beverages until now. He emphasized that this initiative aims to recognize and promote local fermented drinks by allowing individuals, entrepreneurs, societies, and companies to obtain the necessary licenses for production and sale.
The chief minister noted that this move is anticipated to invigorate local businesses and tourism by ensuring that products are made safely and are subject to quality controls, all while safeguarding the state’s rich traditional knowledge. He remarked, “This is a step forward in preserving tradition, empowering local entrepreneurs, and responsibly tapping into our rich heritage.” This regulatory change marks a significant shift in how traditional beverages are handled within the state, highlighting their cultural importance and potential economic benefits.
