Dire Consequences Ahead: AAP MP Warns of Severe Impact from US Business Boycott in India Over Trump Tariffs
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Member of Parliament Ashok Kumar Mittal has sharply criticized U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose a 25 percent tariff on Indian goods, deeming it “illogical” and accusing Washington of “double standards” in its trade practices. In an open letter addressed to Trump, Mittal encouraged the President to prioritize “dialogue over discord, coordination over coercion.”
Mittal responded to Trump’s comments labeling India as a “dead economy,” stating, “Yet this ‘dead’ economy is the 4th largest in the world, soon to be third, and remains the fastest growing among major nations.” He highlighted the significant revenue that American companies earn from India, noting that they generate over $80 billion annually across various sectors such as education, technology, finance, and intellectual property.
This letter follows Trump’s signing of an Executive Order that officially enacts the new tariff on imports from India. Mittal pointed to India’s crucial role in the global air transport market, which he said holds strategic value for the United States; he cited recent deals valued at $2.45 billion signed in 2022. Additionally, Mittal emphasized the integral part India’s tech industry plays in the U.S. economy, stating, “The U.S. digital economy runs on code-much of it written in India.”
The newly imposed tariff will come into effect on August 7, with additional levies set to be enforced 21 days later. The tariffs will apply to all Indian goods entering the U.S., excluding those already in transit or meeting certain exemptions.
Mittal has previously defended India’s decision to purchase oil from Russia amidst U.S. criticism, questioning the fairness of Washington’s stance on trade issues. In his letter, he noted the historical significance of August 7, which marks the anniversary of the Swadeshi Movement launched in 1905-a powerful assertion of economic self-reliance against foreign dominance.
“If 146 crore Indians were to channel that spirit today and initiate a strategic restriction of U.S. businesses, the impact would be far more severe for the United States than for India,” he warned.
Mittal concluded with a call to action for global cooperation, stating, “The future now lies in the hands of those who understand that diplomacy and cooperation are the way forward, not sweeping tariffs.” In his message to Trump, he reiterated, “Let us choose dialogue over discord, coordination over coercion. Let us shape the future through respect, resolve, and renewed commitment to a rules-based global order.”
Meanwhile, the Indian government has expressed that the additional tariffs imposed by the U.S. are “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.” The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that New Delhi will take “all actions necessary to protect its national interests,” as tensions grow over bilateral trade relations.
This unfolding scenario underscores the complexity of international trade dynamics and illustrates the critical need for diplomatic engagement between India and the United States. As both nations navigate these turbulent waters, the emphasis on constructive dialogue remains essential for a stable economic relationship.
