Can AI Teach Assamese? Bridging Global Tech with Northeast India’s Linguistic Heritage

Imagine a young student in a remote village of Assam, eager to learn Assamese but lacking access to traditional educational resources. Now, picture this student interacting with an AI-powered chatbot that not only teaches the language but also adapts to their learning pace and style. This isn’t a distant dream; it’s becoming a reality through innovative AI applications tailored for Assamese.

In May 2025, Gautom Das, an Assamese innovator, launched MK3, a multilingual AI chatbot designed to make technology accessible for non-English speakers and underserved communities. MK3 aims to bridge the digital divide by assisting users in their native languages, including Assamese, without the need for coding knowledge or expensive tools. Similarly, in January 2025, two brothers from Guwahati developed ‘Aakhor AI,’ an AI-powered Assamese language writing assistant. This tool enables users to type in English and seamlessly converts the text into Assamese, enhancing communication and preserving the language in the digital era. Academic institutions are also contributing to this technological advancement. In March 2025, Gauhati University hosted a two-day AI workshop focusing on North East Indian languages. Experts discussed Neural Machine Translation (NMT) for Assamese, Bodo, Manipuri, Nepali, and English, aiming to improve digital language tools and promote linguistic diversity. (theguwahati.com)
