Shocking Flight Incident: Traveler Slapped After Greeting on IndiGo Airlines
Hoosain Ahmed Mazumdar, a 39-year-old from Katigorah, Assam, returned home on Sunday morning after a harrowing 48-hour ordeal following an alleged mid-air assault on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata. His family accused the airline of severe negligence in communication that left them distressed about his whereabouts. Hoosain’s cousin, Dilwar, eventually found him at Barpeta Road station on Saturday evening after he boarded a train for Assam from Kolkata. His uncle, Jubaidul Islam Mazumdar, expressed shock, stating he had posted on Facebook about his nephew’s disappearance. “We were in a state of shock. I had posted that my nephew was missing, and someone responded, saying the boy in the photo was sitting next to him,” Jubaidul recounted.
Dilwar detailed how he located Hoosain, who was disoriented and sitting next to another passenger. “I managed to find him on Saturday evening. I brought him home, and we reached Katigorah around 7 am on Sunday,” he said. Hoosain, who works as a cleaner at a Mumbai gym, boarded a 2 am flight on Friday. He reported feeling terrified during the flight and described his assailant, who he identified as Hafiz Uddin (Hafizur Rahman). “I was very scared on the flight. My body was shivering, so I asked the man’s name. When I said ‘salam’ to him, he suddenly slapped me 3–4 times without any reason,” Hoosain said.
The cabin crew intervened, providing him with water and attempting to calm him down. Hoosain emphasized that he did not provoke the attack. After landing in Kolkata, both he and Hafizur were taken to Bidhannagar police station for questioning. Amid the chaos, Hoosain missed his connecting flight to Silchar. His family criticized IndiGo for failing to arrange alternative travel or provide any updates regarding his situation. A family member stated, “He was handed over to the police, but after that, the airline completely washed its hands off the matter. They neither informed us nor assisted him in traveling further.”
In response, IndiGo labeled Hafizur as an “unruly” passenger and has banned him from flying with the airline for 30 days pending an inquiry. The Bidhannagar police have also initiated legal action against Hafizur.
