Urgent Call to Action: Resolve the Delayed Indo-Naga Issue Now!
On August 3, marking the tenth anniversary of the Framework Agreement between the Government of India and the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (NSCN-IM), the All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) expressed deep concerns regarding a decade devoid of meaningful solutions to the ongoing Indo-Naga political issue. This has, they claim, raised serious questions among the public. The ANSAM emphasized that the Naga community had genuinely celebrated and endorsed the 2015 agreement, which was signed in New Delhi in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent leaders.
Despite the initial hopes instilled by this agreement for a timely resolution to the Indo-Naga issues, ten years have elapsed with little progress, leading to further public frustration. ANSAM conveyed appreciation for the past efforts of Indian Prime Ministers in addressing this complex issue, recalling the notable acknowledgment of the unique historical circumstances of the Nagas by the Government of India under then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in 2002. This acknowledgment was seen as a sign of serious commitment toward resolving prolonged conflicts in the Indian subcontinent.
According to ANSAM, the Indian government’s official stance-that the Nagas have a history of independence and have never been part of India or Myanmar-marked an important milestone in the peace dialogue. The organization reaffirmed that the Naga people have consistently supported the peace process, placing their trust in successive Indian leaderships to find a resolution.
However, ANSAM raised concerns over what it perceives as the Indian government’s ongoing delays and questionable commitment in addressing the Indo-Naga political issue. They urged the government to expedite peace talks, emphasizing the need to return to productive dialogue to achieve a logical conclusion, honoring the Framework Agreement’s spirit.
In its statement, ANSAM reiterated the political nature of the matter, stressing that the extensive discussions over 28 years necessitate a resolution that acknowledges the Naga flag, constitution, and integration as inalienable rights. They cautioned that any agreement lacking these provisions would fail to meet the political aspirations of the Naga people.
The organization called for an inclusive political solution that benefits all Nagas residing in adjacent areas. ANSAM concluded by urging the Naga people to remain vigilant, united, and committed to their pursuit of rightful recognition and realization of their historical and political rights.
