Govt Proposes Extension of President’s Rule in Manipur: Key Developments Ahead
The government moved a resolution in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday to seek approval for an extension of President’s Rule in Manipur for an additional six months, beyond the current expiration date of August 13. Minister of State for Home, Nityanand Rai, introduced the statutory resolution, prompting discussions in the Lok Sabha.
Speaker Om Birla noted that President’s Rule was initially imposed in Manipur on February 13, and parliamentary approval was granted on April 2. The current authorization is valid for six months. Birla emphasized that any extension of President’s Rule must be approved by both Houses of Parliament.
During the debate, Congress MP Anto Antony characterized the ongoing crisis in Manipur as a “manmade disaster,” attributing it to government failures. He described the state, once celebrated for its natural beauty, as now reduced to ashes. He lamented that the peaceful sounds of nature had been replaced by the anguished cries of mothers and the desperation of women subjected to violence, all occurring amid what he described as the government’s silence.
Antony criticized the Manipur government for its response to the escalating violence, accusing it of exacerbating the situation through internet shutdowns, curfews, and harsh police measures. He asserted that rather than safeguarding the populace, the government’s actions have contributed to a landscape of turmoil and chaos.
