Guwahati: Assamese actress Nandini Kashyap has been arrested by Dispur Police following a tragic hit-and-run incident that resulted in the death of 21-year-old polytechnic student Samiul Haque. Reports indicate that she was taken into custody on Tuesday night at a rehearsal venue at Rajdhani Theatre in North Guwahati and subsequently brought to the All Women Police Station at Panbazar for questioning. Her formal arrest occurred on Wednesday.
Kashyap’s arrest comes just a day after Samiul, who had suffered severe injuries, succumbed at Apollo Hospitals on July 29. The incident occurred four days earlier when Kashyap allegedly knocked down Samiul in Guwahati’s Dakhingaon area with her speeding vehicle.
Following the incident, the Rajdhani Theatre group officially terminated its contract with Kashyap. She was reportedly under a two-year contract with the theatre group when the accident occurred.
Eyewitnesses allege that Kashyap was driving her Bolero SUV at speeds exceeding 120 km/h when she struck Samiul, who was assisting a Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) team repairing streetlights. Witness accounts suggest that she fled the scene without stopping and, while being pursued by GMC workers, assaulted a bystander who attempted to document the confrontation at an apartment complex in Kahilipara.
The case has sparked public protests, with civil society and student organizations calling for a thorough and transparent investigation. Samiul was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital before being transferred to Apollo Hospital on July 28; however, despite medical efforts, he passed away the next evening.
Authorities have initiated a comprehensive investigation, examining CCTV footage and forensic evidence related to the incident. While investigators have yet to officially confirm whether Kashyap was behind the wheel, sources suggest that legal proceedings may soon follow based on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
