Discover ‘The Story Keeper’: A Haven Amidst Shuttered Bookshops
Kohima: Amidst the alarming trend of bookshops closing across India, Nagaland’s PenThrill Publication has launched a new independent bookstore, “The StoryKeeper,” aimed at preserving the culture of reading physical books. The store, owned by publisher, writer, and journalist Vishü Rita Krocha, was inaugurated on Monday by Rev. Simon Raikhan, Pastor of New Spring Ministry, Kohima.
Situated in the basement of the YouthNet building, just a block away from PenThrill’s headquarters on Billy Graham Road, The StoryKeeper features a striking red facade that draws immediate attention.
Reflecting on her journey, Krocha noted that the idea of opening a bookstore had been a dream for four to five years. “I had this idea for a long time, but finding an appropriate space proved challenging. When this space became available, I seized the opportunity to turn my dream into reality,” she shared with journalists.
Krocha explained that the name “The StoryKeeper” represents various aspirations for the future. She believes everyone has an important story to tell and hopes to host podcasts and discussions at the bookstore where individuals from diverse backgrounds can come together and share their experiences. She envisions the space as a hub not just for books but also for learning and connecting through personal narratives.
“Opening a bookstore in a time when many are closing down may not seem like a savvy business model. However, as storytellers-whether writers, publishers, or journalists-we don’t pursue stories for financial gain but out of love for storytelling,” said Krocha.
As audiobooks and digital formats dominate the market, Krocha remains steadfast in her preference for physical books. “I’ve never read an e-book. My connection with physical books is so significant that, even as a publisher, I haven’t considered entering the digital market. The experience of flipping through physical pages and the smell of books is irreplaceable,” she emphasized.
The StoryKeeper, co-owned with Jabu Krocha of Think Designs, PenThrill’s in-house design partner, will feature works by local authors and selections from Krocha’s personal collection, with some used books priced as low as Rs 50.
“Having a physical store makes sense for a publication. It’s gratifying to hear my neighbors say that the bookstore has revitalized the area. I aim to introduce more books under the PenThrill brand here,” Krocha stated.
Looking ahead, she revealed that new publications are in the works, focusing on stories about music, bakers, journalists, vendors, and everyday life. Through The StoryKeeper, Krocha aspires to spread a passion for books throughout Kohima and beyond, one story at a time.
