New Guidelines from the Supreme Court to Safeguard Student Mental Health

A worrying trend is emerging among the youth, with instances of suicide increasing due to overwhelming academic pressure. Many young individuals struggle to cope with high expectations from their families and the immense stress to achieve outstanding academic results. In response to these concerns, the Supreme Court has issued guidelines for educational institutions, including coaching centers, to address student mental health issues in the country’s increasingly anxious and pressured educational landscape.

The guidelines were announced following a directive from the Supreme Court last Friday, which ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the death of a 17-year-old aspiring student in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, two years ago. Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta highlighted the lack of effective measures to prevent serious incidents like suicides within student-centered environments. The ruling suggests that the forced cultivation of high-performing students has inadvertently led to mental distress among them. There are still significant gaps in the country’s legal and regulatory framework, despite constitutional and international mandates. Therefore, under Article 141 of the Constitution, the Supreme Court has mandated that educational institutions with 100 or more students must take necessary steps to safeguard their mental health and prevent suicidal tendencies.

The court emphasized particular attention towards cities like Jaipur, Kota, Sikar, Chennai, and Hyderabad, where thousands of students flock to various coaching centers in pursuit of bright futures. It instructed all educational institutions and local administrations to regularly conduct career counseling sessions with students. Furthermore, to alleviate the mental stress experienced by students and parents, institutions must arrange for specialist consultations, ensuring they feel secure and relaxed.

There is a pressing need for students to be prioritized in resolving complaints swiftly. Even the government education sector must oversee educational curricula and academic planning carefully. It is the responsibility of the respective state governments to ensure that no student faces excessive pressure. The Supreme Court’s order will apply to institutions across both public and private sectors, promoting a more supportive environment for students.
