Unveiling New Horizons: PM Modi’s Historic Maldives Visit – Full Itinerary & Key Agendas Revealed!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarked on his journey to the Maldives on Thursday, following the UK segment of his two-nation visit. His arrival in the island nation is scheduled for approximately 9:40 AM IST. This two-day state visit, initiated at the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, marks a significant moment as it will be the first official visit by a head of government since Muizzu took office in November 2023.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized the importance of the Maldives in India’s “Neighbourhood First” policy, referring to the island nation as a key partner in the region. He cited the recent establishment of a “Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership” between India and Maldives, which serves as a guiding framework for bilateral relations. Misri also highlighted the ongoing commitment to mutual growth and security under the MAHASAGAR vision, aimed at enhancing regional cooperation.
During his time in the Maldives, Modi is set to be the guest of honour at the country’s 60th Independence Day celebrations on July 26. His itinerary includes a meeting with President Muizzu, where they will engage in delegation-level talks. The Prime Minister will also inaugurate several development projects funded by India, further solidifying the nation’s commitment to supporting the Maldives.
G. Balasubramanian, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, confirmed that multiple memoranda of understanding (MOUs) would be signed during Modi’s visit, symbolizing a reset in the previously strained diplomatic ties. The relations had faced challenges following Muizzu’s election due to his leanings toward China, making this visit a crucial opportunity for India to reaffirm its influence in the region.
Earlier, during his stay in the UK from July 23 to July 24, Modi met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, where they celebrated the signing of the landmark India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This agreement elevates the bilateral relationship and underscores India’s strategic importance in global trade. Additionally, Modi engaged in discussions with King Charles III at Sandringham Estate, furthering diplomatic ties and presenting a sapling for planting in autumn as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign.
As Modi prepares to meet President Muizzu and engage in further diplomatic activities, his visit stands as a testament to India’s unwavering commitment to fostering strong ties with its neighbors. The Maldives is viewed as an essential partner in India’s overarching regional strategy, and the outcomes of this visit will likely have significant implications for future collaboration.
The Prime Minister’s engaging agenda also includes a ceremonial welcome in Republic Square at around 3 PM IST, followed by the exchange of MOUs and the virtual inauguration of various projects at approximately 5 PM IST. A banquet hosted by President Muizzu will conclude a day of collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
Modi’s two-day visit not only symbolizes a renewed partnership but also reflects India’s ongoing commitment to ensuring stability and growth in its immediate neighborhood, making it a pivotal moment in regional diplomacy.
