Preserving Heritage: Sanchipat Manuscripts Secure Their Future at Rashtrapati Bhavan
In a significant move to honor the classical status of the Assamese language, the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Society based in New Delhi has handed over a collection of five ancient sanchipat manuscripts to the Rashtrapati Bhavan library for preservation and display. The official handover ceremony took place on July 23, with Sudarshan Thakur, the Secretary of Kalakshetra, presenting the manuscripts to Dipti Umashankar, the Secretary of Rashtrapati Bhavan.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from Assam Bhavan in New Delhi, along with representatives from both the Assam government and the central government, underscoring the event’s importance. The sanchipat manuscripts donated include notable works like the ‘Kirtan Ghoxa’ by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev, ‘Adi Dasham’—a poetic translation by Srimanta Sankardev based on the tenth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana, and ‘Nam Ghoxa’ composed by Mahapurush Shri Shri Madhavdev. Additionally, ‘Bhakti Ratnavali’, a Sanskrit work by the Vishnupuri monks that was translated into Assamese by Mahapurush Shri Shri Madhavdev, is among the manuscripts preserved.
Another significant manuscript, ‘Geet Govinda’, originally composed in Sanskrit by Jayadeva and translated into Assamese by the poet Kabiraj Chakravarti in the royal court of Swargadeo Rudra Singha, has also been included in this collection for display. The initiative to compile these valuable manuscripts was made possible under the guidance of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and on the recommendation of Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, with the Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra Society coordinating with various satrasa (Vaishnavite monasteries) across Assam. This effort reflects a commitment to safeguarding and celebrating the rich literary heritage of the Assamese language.
