Urgent Expedition in Sikkim: Assessing High-Risk Glacial Lakes Now!

The Sikkim government has successfully completed a significant scientific expedition as part of its Comprehensive Hazard Assessment of High-Risk Glacial Lakes program, which aims to address potential threats from glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). This crucial expedition took place between June 19 and July 1 and was spearheaded by the State’s Science and Technology Department in partnership with the Mines and Geology Department.

A diverse team, including glaciologists, geographers, geologists, and civil engineers, conducted extensive research on three glacial lakes-Tikip Lake, Bhaley Pokhari, and Doodh Pokhari-in the remote and ecologically sensitive Gaylshing district of West Sikkim. The research team utilized Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) surveys at all three sites to explore the internal structure and stability of the moraine dams surrounding the lakes. These high-resolution geophysical assessments play a crucial role in identifying buried ice, zones of water saturation, and seepage pathways, which are vital indicators in evaluating the risk of future GLOF incidents.

Additionally, the team repaired monitoring sensors located near the East Rathong Glacier, essential for tracking high-altitude atmospheric conditions like temperature, precipitation, humidity, and wind speed. This data will enhance regional climate monitoring efforts. According to an official statement, the findings from this expedition will aid in developing data-driven strategies for mitigation, enhance Sikkim’s disaster preparedness, and contribute to national initiatives aimed at climate resilience and disaster risk reduction throughout the Indian Himalayan region.
