Unraveling the Return: Three Bangladeshi Extremists Brought to Dhaka
Bangladeshi intelligence officials have begun interrogating three individuals recently deported from Malaysia due to suspected ties with the Islamic State terror group, even as a delegation from the Islami Andolan party was welcomed by Chaudhary Anwar ul Haq, the Premier of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, on July 3.
The three Bangladeshi nationals, originally from Cox’s Bazar and Nagaon, arrived at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport shortly after midnight on July 3. They were promptly handed over to officials from the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence’s Counter-Terrorism Intelligence Bureau (CT-IB) for questioning. Nazrul Islam Sohag and Mohammad Redwanul Islam were escorted on Air Asia flight AK-71, while Zahid Ahmed arrived on Batik Air flight OD-162, both under the supervision of Malaysian security personnel.
Following an initial round of interrogation by the CT-IB, the Airport police assumed custody of the three men. This development unfolds amid ongoing investigations into additional Bangladeshi nationals detained by the Malaysian Defence Intelligence Organisation during a month-long operation in Selangor and Johor, where local police continue to question those apprehended.
The meeting between the PoK Premier and the Islami Andolan Bangladesh representatives has drawn attention from Indian and Bangladeshi security agencies. The delegation included Pir Syed Muhammad Ishaq Abu al-Khair, the son of a notable religious figure, along with Muhammed Khalid, Zakir Hussain, and Maulana Mohiuddin. Pir Muhammad Mazhar Saeed Shah, the Information Minister of PoK, was also present at the gathering.
During their discussions, the participants addressed issues of mutual concern, particularly focusing on the dynamic political landscape in the region and the ongoing situation in Kashmir. The IAB delegation expressed their solidarity with the Kashmiri people, highlighting the interconnectedness of regional issues and the rising tensions surrounding them.
In the backdrop of these events, the Awami League party has raised alarms about a potential Islamist agenda aimed at transforming Bangladesh into a “Next Afghanistan,” amplifying the atmosphere of vigilance surrounding these developments.
