Mizoram’s Lifeline Restored: NH-6 Reopens with Renewed Truck Services
Truck movement has resumed on a crucial segment of National Highway-6/306 in Mizoram, six days after the road was blocked by the Mizoram Tipper Association (MTA) for emergency repairs, according to officials. The Kolasib unit of the MTA initiated repairs on the Sairang-Kawnpui section, which had become impassable due to heavy monsoon rains from June 26 to 30. This highway serves as a primary connection between Aizawl and Silchar in Assam, and its blockage led to significant disruptions in the supply of fuel and other essential goods, causing shortages across Mizoram.
In a statement, the MTA announced that the repair work was completed and called off by Tuesday evening, enabling trucks, including those carrying fuel and LPG, to commence movement by early Wednesday. The association indicated that it felt compelled to take action due to the lack of timely repairs by local authorities. “The road condition was so poor that trucks carrying essential goods could not ply,” the MTA stated, expressing gratitude to the commercial vehicle operators and individuals who voluntarily assisted with the roadwork.
While the blockade caused temporary inconvenience, particularly affecting fuel supplies, officials are optimistic that normalcy will soon return as truck operations resume. This incident has highlighted the dire state of NH-6 and has sparked a debate regarding infrastructure maintenance and governmental responsiveness in the remote northeastern states of India.
