Amid Rising Fears: Centre Rejects COVID-19 Vaccine Link to Sudden Deaths in Karnataka’s Hassan

In response to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s recent claims linking heart-related deaths in Hassan district to COVID-19 vaccinations, the Union Health Ministry firmly stated on July 2, 2025, that extensive research conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) has established no connection between the vaccines and unforeseen fatalities. Siddaramaiah had expressed concerns earlier, suggesting that the “hasty approval and distribution” of COVID-19 vaccines may have contributed to these deaths, urging individuals with symptoms like chest pain or difficulty breathing to seek immediate medical attention.

The Health Ministry emphasized that investigations into sudden unexplained deaths across the country have been thorough, involving various agencies, and concluded that lifestyle choices, pre-existing health conditions, and other factors, rather than vaccination, are linked to these tragedies. The Ministry reiterated that the COVID-19 vaccines administered in India are safe and effective with only rare instances of severe side effects, as affirmed by studies conducted by both ICMR and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

Sudden cardiac arrests can stem from various causes, including genetic factors, lifestyle habits, and complications arising from previous COVID-19 infections. To further understand these occurrences, two key studies targeting sudden unexplained deaths among young adults aged 18 to 45 have been implemented. The first study, carried out by ICMR’s National Institute of Epidemiology between May and August 2023, analyzed data from 47 tertiary care hospitals across 19 states, examining cases of seemingly healthy individuals who died suddenly from October 2021 to March 2023. This study found no evidence that COVID-19 vaccinations increase the risk of sudden unexplained deaths in the young adult demographic.

The second study, “Establishing the Cause of Sudden Unexplained Deaths in Young Adults,” is currently being conducted by AIIMS, with collaboration from ICMR, and aims to pinpoint the common causes of such deaths. Preliminary results indicate that myocardial infarctions remain the predominant cause among this age group, with no substantial variations compared to historical data. Genetic mutations have emerged as potential contributors to many unexplained death cases.

Scientific experts continue to assert that claims linking COVID-19 vaccines to sudden deaths lack scientific backing and could undermine public trust in vaccinations, which have been pivotal in saving lives during the pandemic. The Karnataka Chief Minister has noted that over 20 individuals have succumbed to heart-related issues in Hassan recently, prompting the formation of an expert committee led by Dr. Ravindranath from the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, tasked with delivering a report within ten days.

The government remains dedicated to evidence-based public health initiatives to safeguard citizens’ well-being, emphasizing that unfounded speculations surrounding COVID-19 vaccination may contribute to vaccine hesitancy, posing risks to public health across the nation. As discussions continue, the importance of adhering to scientific findings cannot be overstated, with health officials urging the public to remain informed and vigilant.
