Ian Healy Critiques Australia’s Batting Standards Under Di Venuto’s Coaching
Former Australian wicket-keeper Ian Healy has voiced strong criticisms of the national team’s batting coach, Michael Di Venuto, pointing to a worrying decline in Test batting standards during his tenure. The Australian top-order, missing the injured Steve Smith, faced significant challenges in seam-friendly conditions during their first Test since the World Test Championship final loss to South Africa, although they managed to secure a 159-run victory over the West Indies. In that match, batters Sam Konsas, Cameron Green, and Josh Inglis struggled significantly against the West Indian seam attack.
After Marnus Labuschagne’s poor performance as an opener in the WTC final, Australia replaced him with Sam Konsas for the match in Barbados. However, Konsas’s performance was disappointing, with scores of 3 and 5. While the renowned bowling attack led by captain Pat Cummins helped the team avoid disaster, Healy expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of batting in red-ball cricket.
Healy remarked that while he typically focuses his critiques on the players, he finds it hard to ignore the role of team management, including Di Venuto, in the batting struggles. “I love to put it back onto the players more than coaches usually,” Healy stated on SEN. He emphasized that the head coach of Australian cricket and all state batting coaches should be under scrutiny due to the insufficient runs being scored nationwide.
Reflecting on Di Venuto’s time in charge since mid-2021, Healy noted, “In this time, our national team batting has regressed in performance at the Test level.” He insisted that performance is the only thing that matters: “I don’t care how you do it or what will make it easier for you – just get it done.”
The 61-year-old believes the Australian batters appear nervous and lack confidence in their techniques under tough conditions. “They’re not making it easy for themselves at all; players have got to deal better with nerves,” Healy said. He stressed the need for sound techniques and balance when batting, enabling players to make consistent decisions over long periods. Currently, he feels they are falling short of these standards, causing pressure on the lower order, which must either recover lost runs or face defeat. “It’s just too hard at the moment; we’ve got to clear the minds of our top order,” Healy concluded.
