NATO’s Bold Commitment: 5% GDP for Defence and Security Awaits Action!
All NATO members have agreed to increase defense and security spending to 5 percent of GDP by 2035. This commitment was made during the NATO summit in The Hague, where leaders announced that the defense pledge will allocate at least 3.5 percent of GDP annually toward essential defense needs. Additionally, they pledged to invest up to 1.5 percent of GDP on security-related activities, which include protecting critical infrastructure and bolstering the alliance’s defense industrial capabilities. NATO chief Rutte stated that military assistance for Ukraine this year is expected to surpass last year’s figure of $58 billion.
Rutte emphasized that both Europe and Canada need to contribute more to NATO. He also remarked on the severe impact of the recent U.S. strike on Iran, describing it as a significant setback for the country. Furthermore, he identified Russia as a persistent threat in both the short and long term, calling for the swift expansion of defense industrial capacity on both sides of the Atlantic.
U.S. President Donald Trump added that more funding should be directed toward military hardware. He suggested that Russian President Vladimir Putin may have territorial ambitions extending beyond Ukraine. During a recent phone call, Trump urged Putin to collaborate in efforts to end the war in Ukraine. He clarified that he did not discuss a ceasefire with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy during their meeting at the summit.
