Shocking Incident: 40 Family Members Shave Heads in Name of Purity
Seventy-five years have passed since India gained independence, yet superstition and caste discrimination continue to persist in the country. A recent incident in Baiganguda village, located in the Kashipur block of Odisha’s Rayagada district, illustrates this ongoing issue. A family faced social ostracism after a woman from a Scheduled Tribe (ST) community married a man from a Scheduled Caste (SC) community, violating the village’s social norms.
As a result, the villagers collectively marginalized the woman’s family. Reports indicate that to reintegrate into society, the family was required to undergo a ‘purification’ ceremony. This entailed offering a sacrifice to the local deity and subsequently participating in a hair-cutting ritual to symbolize their purification.
Although some members of the ostracized family expressed no objection to these ceremonies, the lack of a formal complaint regarding the incident indicates the community’s silence on such practices. This situation highlights the stubborn adherence to caste hierarchies and social customs that continue to overshadow India’s progress.
