Remembering India’s Historic Day 1 at Headingley: Tendulkar Reflects
Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar evoked memories of a historic victory on Friday by tweeting about the current Indian team’s impressive performance at Headingley. He drew a parallel to the famous 2002 Test against England, where India achieved a remarkable win. On Day 1 of the first Test in Leeds, Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal both hit centuries, propelling India to a score of 359/3. Tendulkar commended these young batsmen, along with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, for establishing a “solid foundation” for the innings. In his tweet, he reflected on the 2002 match, saying, “India’s batting today reminded me of the Headingley Test in 2002, when Rahul, Sourav Ganguly, and I scored hundreds in the first innings, leading us to victory.”
That iconic match saw India declare at 628/8, with significant contributions from Dravid (148), Tendulkar (193), and Ganguly (128). India ultimately won by an innings and 46 runs, marking a pivotal triumph in their cricket history. With Gill reaching 127 not out and Jaiswal scoring 101, along with Pant still batting on 65, Tendulkar hinted at a possible repeat performance by asking, “Who will be the third centurion this time?”
In another highlight, Jaiswal became the first Asian opener to score a Test century at Headingley, making his debut in England. Gill, captaining India for the first time, showcased his talent with an elegant unbeaten century. The two batsmen formed a critical partnership, adding 129 runs after India lost two early wickets, and Pant’s aggressive batting later on kept the momentum going. As India aims to set a commanding first-innings total, the echoes of 2002 resonate strongly, setting the stage for what could be another memorable Test at Headingley.
