Minister Urges Swift Action: Ensuring Rain Preparedness in the Scenic Nilgiris for a Safer Future
Minister for Information and Publicity M.P. Saminathan announced that Avalanche in the Nilgiris region has experienced a 25% increase in rainfall compared to the same period in 2024. Speaking to reporters after a review meeting assessing the district administration’s preparedness for heavy rain emergencies, he noted that while recent rainfall was notable, it was less severe than the conditions recorded two weeks prior.
Saminathan highlighted that milder winds accompanying the rain have resulted in minimal disruptions to traffic and public transportation services. However, he reported that eight houses were damaged, with two suffering significant destruction. Additionally, two landslips were recorded, and 24 electricity poles were uprooted. The minister assured residents that the government is working diligently to restore power and water supply to those affected.
In his remarks, Saminathan commended the district administration for their efforts in keeping residents safe during adverse weather conditions. He stated that various government departments are actively assessing the damage to both public and private infrastructure to expedite recovery efforts.
As of Wednesday, the weather in the Nilgiris has improved, prompting the Forest Department to announce the reopening of all tourist spots in Udhagamandalam town and nearby areas that had previously been closed due to the rains. However, it noted that the Ninth Mile shooting spot and the surrounding pine forest will remain inaccessible for maintenance work.
This recent rainfall not only underscores the changing weather patterns in the region but also highlights the government’s responsive measures to natural calamities. As the situation develops, authorities continue to monitor the landscape closely to ensure public safety and infrastructure stability.
The local administration urges residents and visitors alike to stay informed and exercise caution as the region transitions back to normalcy following the rains.
